Woman Left Daughter, 4, In Car In Cold Weather In Suffolk: Police

The girl was strapped to a safety seat in a car that was not running, police say.

HUNTINGTON STATION, NY — A Huntington Station mother was arrested after she was accused of leaving her 4-year-old daughter unattended in a vehicle in cold weather on Saturday night, Suffolk police said.

Suffolk police got a 911 call from someone who saw a child left restrained in a safety seat in a 2021 Toyota in a parking lot at 711 E. Jericho Turnpike, Huntington Station, around 6:45 p.m., police said. The girl was alone in the car, and the engine was not running, police said.

Officers found the mother, Maricela Avila, 31, of Huntington Station, and the child was removed from the car, police said. The girl was evaluated by officers, police said.

Avila was arrested and charged with endangering the welfare of a child. She was held overnight at the Fourth Precinct and scheduled for arraignment at First District Court in Central Islip on Sunday.
