Woman's Dog Dies After She Left It Alone For Days: Police

The woman left Bentley, her 3-pound Yorkshire Terrier-Maltese mix, in a crate without proper ventilation for a week, police say.

HUNTINGTON STATION, NY — A Huntington Station woman was arrested Wednesday after Suffolk police said she left her dog alone for several days in July, leading to his death.

A 911 call reported a dead dog in a crate covered in feces outside of East Pulaski Road on July 20, police said. Kiswanda Franklin, 33, left Bentley, her 3-pound Yorkshire Terrier-Maltese mix, in a crate between July 14 and July 20 in her apartment without enough ventilation, police said. When Franklin returned, Bentley was dead, police said.

Franklin was charged with animal cruelty after police detectives assigned to the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Biological, Environmental and Animal Safety Team investigated the dog's death.
