2 Kayakers, 17, Rescued After Overturning In Bay

The teens were found hanging on to their kayaks in the bay, police say.

ISLIP, NY — Two girls, both 17, were rescued from the Great South Bay off Ocean Beach Friday after their kayaks overturned, police said.

According to Suffolk County police, the incident took place at 11:45 a.m. about 500 feet offshore. Marine Bureau Sergeants Ronald Breuer and Michael Gorey, aboard Marine Charlie, responded to the call and, upon arrival, the sergeants found the girls, both of Franklin Square, hanging onto their kayaks, police said.

They were not wearing life jackets, police said.

They had been in the water for about 20 minutes, were uninjured and were taken back to Ocean Beach Marina, police said.

Marine Bureau Police Officers Robert Reuter and Joseph Riviello, aboard Marine Juliet, retrieved the kayaks, police said.
