3 Town Of Islip Employees Honored For Life-Saving Efforts

The three men were recognized for their quick-thinking responses during several life-threatening situations over the past year.

ISLIP, NY - Islip Town officials recently recognized three employees for their quick-thinking responses to residents who were in several life-threatening situations over the past year.

Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter was joined by members of the Islip Town Board and Town Public Safety officials recently, to honor three Town employees for their quick-thinking responses to residents who were in life-threatening situations.

In 2017, Joseph Cassano was on his way to an interview for the current position he holds as a part-time dispatcher with the Town when he jumped into action to help a postal worker whose leg was injured when he was struck by a car while removing mail from the back of his truck.

Cassano placed a tourniquet on the postal worker’s leg, until EMS arrived and treated the injury.

Most recently, last month Cassano stepped in to save an unresponsive man who was locked in his car by breaking the window and preforming CPR until EMS arrived at the scene.

In addition, last month while on duty at Ronkonkoma Lake, Marina Guard Harry Torborg help an elderly woman after he noticed she was out of breath and weakened by the extreme heat.

He immediately assisted the woman to a bench, offered her water, and notified Marina Guard Supervisor John Hons.

The two asked the woman where she was heading, to which she replied, ‘home to Hempstead.’ The guards immediately notified Suffolk County Police, and contacted a local assisted living facility where the woman had been residing.

She was treated at the hospital, released and is living in a long-term care facility.

“I am proud to say that here in the Town of Islip, we are fortunate to have the finest employees,” Supervisor Angie Carpenter said. “Their untiring efforts in ensuring the well-being of others, is demonstrated daily through their humility and compassion to those they have sworn to protect,” added the Supervisor.

All three were honored by Carpenter as well as Commissioner for Public Safety Anthony D’Amico, Deputy Commissioner for Public Safety Anthony Prudenti and members of the Town Board.
