400 Plows Take To Islip Streets After Snowfall

ISLIP, NY — As Long Island received its first snowfall of the year, many towns made preparations to ensure the safety of its residents.

The Town of Islip, which received five to eight inches of snow, told Patch that approximately 100 town crew members began treating roads at 1:30 a.m. Friday. Crews switched to plow operation at about 3:30 a.m, and currently have more than 400 plows on the road.

A spokesperson also said that the town has used about 1,000 tons of salt to prevent ice from forming on the roads. The Town of Islip has an estimated 1,200 miles of road, the spokesperson said, the equivalent of driving from Islip to Daytona Beach, Florida one way.

“We always encourage residents to remove their cars from the road in advance of a storm, and if necessary, to park on their lawn, " said Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter. "This gives crews the ability to plow roads efficiently and safely.”

All roads are expected to be cleared by end of day.
