• Central Islip Charter School Eyes Major Expansion (patch.com) — Families in Central Islip should know that South Shore Charter School is rapidly expanding and planning to grow into a full K–12 program while remaining in the community. The tuition-free public charter already serves mostly Central Islip and Brentwood students, boasts strong test scores, and is actively seeking more space so it can add middle and eventually high school grades.
• LI oyster farm, arts group give shells new life (libn.com) — An Islip-based oyster farm, Toasted Oysters, is teaming up with the Long Island Arts Alliance to turn thousands of discarded shells into free or low-cost materials for local schools, museums, and artists. The Long Island Creative Reuse Project keeps shells out of landfills, gives Toasted Oysters a tax break and new customers, and strengthens arts-agriculture connections across Long Island.
• Days After 1st Human Case Of West Nile Virus, 6 Mosquito Samples Test Positive In Brookhaven: Officials (patch.com) — West Nile virus–positive mosquito samples have been found in multiple Suffolk communities, including West Islip and Islip, following the season's first human case. County health officials urge residents, especially older adults and those immunocompromised, to avoid mosquito bites, report dead birds, and call vector control for mosquito problems.
