Today's riddle: Where do math teachers go on vacation? 🤔 (Answer below!)
1. Developer slashes housing plan for defunct Sayville golf club land (newsday.com) — A long-debated plan to redevelop Sayville's former Island Hills Golf Club has been scaled back again, with Rechler Equity now proposing 568 mostly for-sale homes. Islip Town staff are reviewing the South Bay Village plan, which would still bring more than 1,400 new residents and could significantly reshape housing options and neighborhood character if the town board ultimately approves it.
2. Emily Finn Foundation takes action after tragedy (trihamletnews.com) — Domestic violence advocates connected to the late Emily Finn are working to build education programs and awareness campaigns in the Town of Islip, with hopes of inspiring statewide legislation. Local residents can expect school visits, an October "Love, Emily" campaign, and a November gala in West Sayville, all aimed at teaching healthy relationships and improving how professionals recognize abuse.
3. John Brower Jr. Foundation to host 11th annual Heroes Against Heroin walk (liherald.com) — Families touched by addiction in and around Islip are invited to the Heroes Against Heroin 5K Walk at Jones Beach on Sept. 12, supporting Outreach's treatment programs, including those based in Islip. The event offers a chance to remember loved ones, connect with recovery resources, and receive free Narcan training while helping expand local services for young people and families.
4. Bellport Man, Accused In Connection With Missing Girl Case, Rejects Plea Deal: Report (patch.com) — A Suffolk County man accused in a high-profile missing teen case has rejected a plea deal and appears headed for trial, while prosecutors say the investigation continues. Police previously reported the 14-year-old was ultimately found in good health in Islip, but have not shared further details, leaving many local questions about what happened during the 25 days she was missing.
