1. Suffolk Supervisors Call For Albany To Address Unfunded Mandates And Property Tax Pressures (patch.com) — Islip Supervisor Angie Carpenter joined other Suffolk town leaders in Farmingville to press Albany for relief from unfunded mandates and a rigid 2 percent property tax cap that they say strain local budgets. The supervisors want a meeting with Gov. Hochul to adjust the tax-cap formula and give towns like Islip more flexibility to cover rising pension, service, and infrastructure costs without overburdening homeowners.
2. LI MacArthur Airport Bussiness District: an economic hub poised for growth (longislandpress.com) — A new economic impact study finds the MacArthur Business District, anchored by Long Island MacArthur Airport in the Town of Islip, supports tens of thousands of jobs and billions in activity. Local leaders see the area at an inflection point, urging coordinated planning, infrastructure upgrades, and branding to attract more businesses, housing, and travelers to this growing hub.
3. Starbucks closing 250 stores this week— 17 in NY alone. Is yours on the chopping block? (newsbreak.com) — Residents in Islip will soon lose their Starbucks at 455 Main Street as part of the company's plan to close 250 U.S. stores, including 17 in New York. The chain cites underperformance and a shift toward redesigned, cozier cafes as it restructures operations and trims locations across the state and New York City.
4. Man Charged With Felony DWI After Selden Crash: Police (patch.com) — A 41-year-old man has been charged with felony aggravated DWI after police say his car rear-ended another vehicle at a Selden intersection Saturday afternoon, with the case now moving through First District Court in Central Islip. He pleaded not guilty, was released on his own recognizance, and has had his driver's license suspended while the case proceeds.
5. Long Island Ducks Get Their Own Day In Suffolk After Championship Run (patch.com) — Suffolk County has officially declared Oct. 6 as "Long Island Ducks Day," celebrating the team's championship season at Fairfield Properties Ballpark in Central Islip, just a short drive from Islip.
