Four Rescued After Boat Capsizes in Great South Bay

Two of the people who were rescued were hospitalized with minor injuries.

ISLIP, NY - Four people were rescued after their sailboat capsized in the Great South Bay in Islip on Sunday night, according to Suffolk Police.

Teresa Pinnola, 20, of Islip and her three cousins Shilo Immerman, 17, Jarad Immerman, 22 and Kyle Sheets, 22, all of Arizona, were on board a 14-foot Sunfish sailboat in the Great South Bay a quarter mile south of Bayberry Point when a part failed, causing the boom to strike Shilo at about 5:50 p.m.

The boat then capsized, throwing all four into the water.

Witnesses on shore called 911 and Marine Bureau officers as well as the Islip Fire Department responded.

Officers Kevin Comiskey and Gregory Stroh pulled Pinnola and Jarad from the water onto the rescue boat.

Firefighters on board the fire department vessel pulled alongside the sailboat, rescued Sheets, and took the sailboat in tow. Shilo was pulled out of the water by good samaritans on a passing vessel.

All four were transported to the Bayberry Beach and Tennis Club in Islip.

Jarad and Shilo were both transported by Islip Exchange Ambulance to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

No other injuries were reported.
