Islip Town Awarded $1 Million To Build New Animal Shelter
The town will be constructing a new shelter to replace the former existing facility that is over 54 years old.

ISLIP, NY - The Town of Islip received almost a million dollars through 2 grants to build a new animal shelter, officials announced on Friday.
The new 19,000 square foot shelter will be built adjacent to the Town's Department of Public Works facility in Central Islip, replacing the existing facility that is over 54 years old.
The shelter will be built with the money from the two grants. The first grant, worth $500,000 was awarded to the town through the New York State and Municipal Facilities Program (SAM) Capital Funding.

The second grant for $498,200 was the result of the newly created Companion Animal Capital Fund.
“We’ve worked diligently for this funding opportunity which will allow for the better care of companion shelter animals, including dogs and cats, and provide more resources for those in our communities looking to continue the work of animal advocacy, care, and adoptions,” Senator Phil Boyle said. “After working with the Town of Islip for so many years on animal welfare and safety, and seeing their current facility in need of major improvements, it is gratifying to see these funds make their way to support the Town’s efforts.”

The Town plans to break ground on the new shelter by the spring of 2018, and is looking to complete the construction by the end of 2019.
“It is very reassuring, that the animals will receive quality care, in a nurturing, state-of-the-art environment, until they find their forever home,” Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter said.
