​Islip Town Officials Encourage Residents To Exercise Caution As Winter Storm Leaves Area

Islip Town officials are urging residents to continue to exercise caution as the recent winter storm leaves the area.

Although Winter Storm Stella did not hit as hard as originally expected, the drop in overnight temperatures will lead to icy conditions along roadways.

“Our Town crews and public safety officials did an outstanding job clearing our roadways, and keeping a close on eye on the storm track, and preparing for any possible outcome," Supervisor Angie Carpenter said. "I would remind residents that even though the storm was not as we anticipated, high winds, heavy rainfall and the expected drop in temperature, can lead to unsafe situations, if residents are not properly prepared. Please travel only if absolutely necessary, and be extremely cautious on all roadways,” said Supervisor Carpenter.

A flood advisory will be in effect until 5 p.m. in poor drainage areas for rain and snowmelt.

The combination of rain and melting snow, in addition to storm drains covered by heavy snow that fell earlier this morning, may result in minor flooding.

A wind advisory remains in effect until 6 p.m. Winds are expected to continue between 20 and 30 mph, with a few gusts of 45 to near 50 mph. Highest winds are expected along the coast, and on elevated bridges and roadways. Temperatures will drop below freezing at approximately 11 p.m. on Tuesday, and won’t climb above freezing until approximately 1 p.m. Friday.

The Suffolk County Emergency Operations Center will close at 4 p.m. The Town of Islip Emergency Operations will close at 5 p.m.

PSEG LI is reporting 121 customers effected in Islip with the majority in Brentwood and Hauppauge. Customers affected by power outages should call 1-800-490-0075.

Park Rangers will continue to monitor road conditions, and notify the Department of Public Works accordingly.

The anticipated drop in overnight temperatures will likely lead to icy conditions for the morning commute. Islip Town crews will salt and sand problem areas, particularly around schools and major intersections, while working with our counterparts at the State and County level to cover highways and other major roads in our Town.
