ISLIP, NY - A 16-year-old Long Island student recently hosted a prom for veterans in Islip.
For her Girl Scout Gold Award project, Rebecca Clock of Troop 1968, planned and hosted the event at the Rusy Bohm American Legion Post 411 in Islip.
Clock, a junior from St. John the Baptist High School in West Islip, has been around veterans all her life. Both her father and grandfather are veterans and her whole family is active at the local Legion Post.

As a result, she learned that learned that many veterans missed their prom as a result of their service and thought hosting the event would be a nice way to give something back.
"I've known Rebecca since she was a little girl," Suffolk County Legislators Tom Cilmi said. "She has grown into a beautiful, smart young woman with the kindest of hearts. I’m so proud of her."

The prom, held on Saturday, drew over 50 guests including several World War II veterans. The oldest veteran in attendance was 98-years-old.
The community came together to help Clock execute this special event. Local volunteers helped Clock decorate the space and community members also donated items for raffle baskets.
All proceeds from the event went to support programs at the American Legion Post.
In addition, music was provided free of charge by Partners In Sound DJ Mike Pitera, who was also able to provide a doo-wop group, "All Good Friends."
"It was great to see the smiles on the faces of these American heroes. They danced the night away as if they were back in high school," Suffolk Legislator Steven Flotteron, who also attended the prom, said. "I don’t think Rebecca realizes how special this event really was. It’s a testament to the value of scouting. I’m just so thrilled I could be there to participate."
In addition to the two legislators, local Senator Monica Martinez was also in attendance.
