Protesters To Rally Against Councilwoman's Facebook Post

The local councilwoman made a Facebook post that has been referred to as "hateful, divisive, and ignorant," according to rally organizers.

ISLIP, NY - A rally has been planned for Tuesday afternoon to protest a recent statement made by Islip Town Councilwoman Trish Bergin Weichbrodt.

Over the weekend, the local councilwoman wrote a post on her Facebook page that read, ""I'm looking at warm getaways for kids February break. I'm wondering about El Salvador, Haiti, or Somalia #recommendations."

Bergin Weichbrodt has since deleted the original post and posted a new status that read: I have learned that my Facebook post yesterday offended some of you. Please accept my sincere apology.

The comments came after President Donald Trump, displeased with a proposal to bring back protections for immigrants from Haiti, El Salvador and African countries as part of a bipartisan immigration deal, asked the lawmakers why "all these people from s---hole countries" are coming to America.

In response to the comments, the rally will be held from 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in front of Islip Town Hall at 655 Main St.

"Councilwoman Bergin's recent statement mocking people of El Salvador, Haiti and Somalia is hateful, divisive, ignorant and is unbecoming of a government official," the event description reads. "In the age of Donald Trump politicians feel free to spew this type of rhetoric. Let's show up to let her know that we will not stand idly by."
