QUEENS, NY — Sutphin Senior Residence, a new 173-home affordable and supportive housing development at 97-10 Sutphin Boulevard in Jamaica is now open.
Breaking Ground, a supportive housing developer, and Community Healthcare Network (CHN) held a ribbon cutting ceremony on Thursday.
The 15-story building includes 52 supportive housing units for formerly homeless New Yorkers, 120 affordable apartments for adults ages 62 and older earning 50 percent or less of the area median income, and one unit for a resident superintendent.
"Through our partnership with Community Healthcare Network, residents can access high-quality care right where they live, while the broader Jamaica community gains an important new healthcare resource," Brenda Rosen, President and CEO of Breaking Ground said.
"We're proud to bring this model to Queens and excited about what Sutphin Senior Residence will mean for the entire neighborhood."
The development is Breaking Ground's first permanent supportive housing residence in Queens.
Sutphin Senior Residence provides on-site social services for all tenants and includes a new Federally Qualified Health Center operated by CHN.
The center offers primary care, prenatal and women's healthcare, pediatrics and behavioral health services, with a dental clinic planned to open later this year.
Designed by Bernheimer Architecture with older adults in mind, the building features outdoor garden spaces, active design elements and accommodations for residents with mobility challenges.
It is also Breaking Ground's second residence to meet Passive House certification standards, designed to reduce energy use and support lower-emission residential operations.
