#100 - Winter Hiking In Nissequogue River State Park
Our first installation of 100 Things to do in Kings Park focuses on what may be the region's most recognizable landmark.
It's Sunday morning and the sun is shining. You start daydreaming about fresh air and long walks, but then you realize it’s a cold January day, so you push all thoughts of connecting with nature from your mind. That is, of course, unless you live in Kings Park.
Winter in Kings Park brings a unique opportunity to hike the Nissequogue River State Park, a place where you can enjoy sights that maybe hidden during the summer months, but are just as beautiful and inspiring.
The Nissequogue River State Park encompasses 520 acres in the hamlet of Kings Park. It is home to trails, fields, saltwater wetlands, tidal pools and hardwood forests.

There are countless year round outdoor activities, including running, fishing, bird watching, kayaking and cross country skiing. But for those who have visited this remarkable place, it’s the soaring views that leave you breathless. The sweeping scenes of the Nissequogue River and the Long Island Sound are spectacular and hiking is a wonderful way to experience all the winter wonderment this park offers.
In the park, The Long Island Greenbelt Trail runs parallel to the Nissequogue River and is a wonderful choice for those who love natural terrain, with a beautiful water view. If you prefer a paved trail, the one and a half mile Kings Park Hike and Bike Trail is for you. This trail is baby carriage and bike friendly. It currently runs from Old Dock Road to St. Johnland Road, along the former railroad spur.
“Hiking in the park provides the most spectacular water view scenery on Long Island, and hiking on these bare-treed trails in the winter transforms that scenery into majestic panoramic water views," said Kathie Plant, an avid runner and hiker.
