Accident on Main Street in Smithtown Resurrects Safety Concerns

has again brought up questions regarding the safety of that stretch of road, the same area where Kings Park native and U.S. Army Veteran

On May 5, the girls, ages 9 and 13 years old were hit by a car traveling westbound on Main Street. The 9-year old was airlifted to the hospital and the 13-year old was transported.

The concerns were brought to the attention of the Smithtown Town Board on Tuesday afternoon when Lavena Sipes, mother of 11-year old Courtney Sipes who lost her life after being hit by a car on the same stretch of road last year addressed the board.

“It was so horribly scary just to get out of the car in front on Napper Tandy’s bar. I was giving flyers out on the street there. I wouldn’t even cross the street because I felt that it was so unsafe and as an adult I don’t think that I should be afraid to cross the street,” Gallagher said.
