Public to Vote on Use of Capital Funds To Replace R.J.O Roof
Board authorizes proposition to be included on the May 17 ballot.
The Kings Park Board of Education voted to authorize a proposition to be included on the ballot for the May 17 meeting to authorize the use of funds for a capital improvement project to replace the roof at R.J.O Intermediate School.
The proposition would be put to the public to vote on the approval to use capital funds for the replacement of the roof. The replacement is expected to cost approximately $594,922 and the board is asking that a reserve fund of $1.1million be established to cover the cost of repairs. Any unspent money is put back into the reserves, however if the cost were to exceed the approved amount, the additional money would have to be put to another vote by the public.
An inspection of the roof and exterior of the building was documented in a Building Condition Survey Summary Report presented to the board in January 2011 where the roof at R.J.O was found to be in an unsatisfactory condition. The portion of the roof that is slate would not have to be replaced but would need to be better maintained with loose roofing to be replaced or fixed.

H2M Engineering Firm presented a plan to the board to replace the roof at the March 22 board meeting. The roof has significant cracks and the seems have started to split causing water leaks that have saturated some of the interior walls. There were also outside masonry cracks that were noted.
The next board meeting will be held at the high school on March 31 at 7 p.m.
