SPCA: Hauppauge Woman Neglected Horses

The 61-year-old woman has been charged with animal cruelty.

A Hauppauge woman faces an animal cruelty charge after authorities say her three horses were found emaciated and sick.

Suffolk County SPCA Chief Roy Gross said 61-year-old Helen Malazzo kept three horses at a boarding facility at 193 South Street in Manorville. There was no running water on the property, Gross said.

A veterinarian who examined one of the horses found it to be so sick and emaciated that he wasn’t sure it would survive without immediate veterinary care, Gross said.

The other two horses were also neglected, he said.

All three horses were seized by the SPCA and are now in foster care receiving proper care. Malazzo will return to First District Court in Central Islip on Oct. 5.
