Hampshire Country Club Becomes Official Course for Mamaroneck High School Golf Team

Adam Rizzuti has been coaching the Mamaroneck Tigers golf team for the past three years. A popular art teacher at Mamaroneck high school, Rizzuti is an avid golfer himself who has embraced the opportunity to lead the team through a few rocky seasons. In 2011, after losing nearly half its players to graduation, the Tigers went 3-15. Last year was a rebuilding year, with the team going 6-11.

So far this year, the team is 2-1, but not without a few rough patches. After severe weather in March, there were adjustments to the schedule and the team was unable to practice at its normal driving ranges. Instead of cutting practice time, Hampshire Country Club accommodated the team—making the club available three times per week.

“The Mamaroneck High School Varsity Golf Team would like to thank Hampshire Country Club for opening up its golf course to us and making us so incredibly welcome there,” said Rizzuti. “Hampshire has saved us, at a moment’s notice when we had to make adjustments to our schedule due to March snowstorms and when driving ranges could not accommodate our team. As the coach, I was able to carry a slightly larger team this year, involving more high school golfers, specifically underclassmen, because Hampshire gave us so many practice dates. This will help build a stronger program for years to come. Thank you again!”

With new ownership, Hampshire Country Club has made a commitment to help young students in the community, such as the Mamaroneck Tigers golf team.

“We were more than happy to accommodate the Mamaroneck Varsity Golf Team,” said Stephen Till, Hampshire Country Club General Manager. “It is our pleasure to have the young golfers practice on our course, learn teamwork and responsibility through sports. And most importantly, go Tigers!”

In 2009 Hampshire Country Club closed due to deteriorating economic conditions and a significant loss of membership. The Club was purchased and re-opened in 2010 and has grown from 0 to 370 members, invested and improved facilities and been restored as an important community amenity.

The 116 acre Club offers a Devereux Emmet-designed 18-hole golf course, seven Har-Tru tennis courts, beautiful golf and tennis pavilions, heated swimming and wading pools overlooking the Long Island Sound, a newly renovated 35,000 square foot clubhouse and limitless social and dining possibilities, from upscale choices in the executive dining or banquet rooms to more casual options in the bar or grill.
