Mam'k to Begin Leaf Collection Nov. 1

The information below was provided by the Village of Mamaroneck.

Mamaroneck Village’s fall curbside leaf pile collection program begins Thursday, Nov. 1.

Please note the attached general schedule (please click to the right of the article), which residents can use as a rule of thumb for the number of passes, at the least, which the Village of Mamaroneck plans to make throughout the village.

Beginning Nov. 1, leaves must be raked loose to the curb, and for safety reasons must never be more than three feet into the street. Branches and brush must be cut into lengths not exceeding four feet in length, bundled with strong string or twine, and placed at the curb separately.  Branches and brush placed with the leaf piles create problems with the leaf collection program and at times may clog the machines, so please keep that in mind.

After Dec. 31, the Village will not pickup leaves again until April 1. 

Between now and Oct. 31, residents and gardeners have four basic options for the disposal of leaves.  Either in:

• Biodegradable brown paper leaf bags placed at the curb on your pick-up day.   Check your schedule at home, or check the Village website at: http://www.village.mamaroneck.ny.us/pages/mamaroneckny_webdocs/2012%20Recycling%20Calendar.pdf; or
• Open, clean garbage cans placed at the curb on your pick-up day (with holes in the bottom to prevent the accumulation of water).  Again, check your schedule at home, or check the Village website at: http://www.village.mamaroneck.ny.us/pages/mamaroneckny_webdocs/2012%20Recycling%20Calendar.pdf; or
• Have your gardener or landscaper drop your yard waste (bagged or loose) at the Department of Public Works (DPW) transfer station on Thursday or Friday afternoons between 12:30 and 2:30 p.m. for a fee of $52 (this is the updated fee) for each four cubic yards of material.  Vouchers can be purchased from the Village Clerk’s Office during normal office hours from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; or
• Either compost them or “leaf-cycle” them by mowing them into your lawn.  While some piles or accumulations of leaves may be too large to accommodate mowing them into a lawn, the benefits of mowing and composting leaves directly into lawns include adding nutrients to your lawn, increasing the moisture content of soil, and avoiding major efforts involved with the collection and disposal of leaves.
