Nelida Tirado, well known for her flamenco and contemporary Latin dance performances, including her flamenco solo in Riverdance, will be accompanied by two flamenco guitarists and a flamenco singer. For those who have not had the pleasure of seeing a live flamenco performance, it is an energetic and enthralling dance form that demonstrates both a seductive and sometimes humorous view of life, love, and the challenges that they bring.

Opening for Nelida Tirado will be Mamaroneck’s own Off Center Dance Theatre, (OCDT) a not for profit organization founded in 1991 by Joe Antony Cavise of DanceCavise. In addition to creating opportunities for young professional dancers to work with choreographers in a concert setting, OCDT reaches out to physically and emotionally challenged children by mentoring them and providing interactive workshops.

VOMAC is also sponsoring screenings of important dance movies at The Mamaroneck Public Library and on Saturday, August 29th, the 2011 production from Spain; Carmen (112 minutes long) will be shown at 2 p.m. While the infamous story of Carmen has been told many times through opera, this telling is done through breathtaking flamenco choreography by Antonio Gades and Carlos Saura’s deft film direction.

Also being shown at The Mamaroneck Public Library at 2 p.m. on the following Saturdays are Joffrey: Mavericks of American Dance, August 8, (82 minutes long), and Fosse, August 22, (127 minutes long).

These events are all free to the public and demonstrate VOMAC’s commitment to both showcasing local talent, and to bringing the arts, wherever we may find them, to Mamaroneck.
