A Day in the Life of Larchmont, October 20, 2011

The Larchmont Public Library presents A DAY IN THE LIFE OF LARCHMONT, a unique photography exhibit on display in the Library’s Oresman Gallery from October 1 through October 30.  The exhibit, sponsored by the Larchmont Historical Society, features photography from numerous photographers all taken within a single 24-hour period in October 2011.   There will be a reception with several of the photographers attending on Monday, October 1, from 6:30pm to 8:00pm in the Oresman Gallery. Everyone is invited.

In mid-2011, people were invited, via posters, newspaper articles, local websites and newsletters, to take photos in Larchmont (defined for the purposes of the project as the 10538 postal area, which includes the Village of Larchmont and most of the Unincorporated part of the Town of Mamaroneck, anytime on Thursday, October 20, 2011, from midnight to midnight.  They could then submit up to 10 images for possible inclusion in the exhibit of the project entitled  “A Day in the Life of Larchmont”.

The photographers were instructed to focus on public life, domestic scenes, work, school, play, iconic Larchmont images, etc.  There were no assignments as such, just freedom to photograph life in Larchmont on that day.   Fifty photographers, some professionals and most gifted amateurs, primarily from Larchmont, with a few from Mamaroneck and New Rochelle, submitted up to 10 photos each to the Larchmont Historical Society.   From over 400 photographs 180 images showing various aspects of life in Larchmont on an ordinary day were selected for the exhibit.

A similar project took place in 1991 when Lynne Crowley, who currently serves as the Society’s Archivist, organized a photo project by the same name and with the same concept to celebrate the Larchmont Centennial.  Based on the success and popularity of that original idea and exhibit, Crowley wanted to do it again. Twenty years later, she suggested that the Larchmont Historical Society pursue it.  This fall, the Historical Society will be publishing a book called “A DAY IN THE LIFE OF LARCHMONT” which will feature many of the photographs featured in the exhibit. Crowley anticipates the book to be available for sale by October 1.

The Larchmont Historical Society was chartered in 1981 as a not-for-profit educational corporation by the New York State Board of Regents to discover, preserve and disseminate information concerning the natural, social and civic history of Larchmont.  The general purpose of the Society is to bring together people interested in history; especially in the history of the Village of Larchmont and the unincorporated area of the Town of Mamaroneck, New York.

The Society maintains an archive of maps, photographs, documents and books as well as other objects related to the history of Larchmont; publishes a newsletter, offers regular programs to educate the public about the history of Larchmont, including the people who lived here, their homes and activities, conducts tours for school children and adults and offers outreach lectures to other groups in the community.   Some of the popular programs include the House Tour, Antiques Appraisal Day and the Century Homes Club.

A voluntary Board of Trustees elected by the members of the Society governs the organization. The current president of the Larchmont Historical Society is Larchmont native, Nancy White, who, with her husband John Feldtmose, owns The Flower Bar on Addison St.   She is also on the Board of the Larchmont Chamber of Commerce.  The archive of the Larchmont Historical Society is located at the Mamaroneck Town Center.  The Society can be reached at (914) 381-2239 or online at www.larchmonthistory.org.
