United in their passion to give back and their belief in education for all children, Carine Verschueren, Karen Regan and Sandra Wong Geroux started the Westchester Volunteer Chapter of Room to Read late 2010.  With their combined talents and diverse backgrounds, they hope to impact the lives of many children.

Room to Read was founded 11 years ago by John Wood, author of “Leaving Microsoft to change the world”.   Its programs focus on building libraries, reading rooms in schools, printing local language books and offering scholarships for girls.   The NGO is active in Nepal, Laos, Vietnam, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, India, Cambodia, South-Africa and Zambia.  So far 10,000 libraries have been built, 10,000 girls are in its scholarship program (part of the new gender equality focus) and overall the lives of 5 million children have been changed.

John was featured among the top 10 philantropists along with the Clintons and the Gates in the November 2010 issue of Barron’s.    The NGO also received a four star rating (the highest rating) from Charity Navigator, confirming is it one of the charities that provides “bang for your bucks” and truly is a charity worthy of trust with sound fiscal management.

And while there is no shortage of good causes in Westchester, one dollar goes so much farther in the countries where Room to Read operates.   For example:  1$ produces 1 Local Language Book ; $250 puts one girl through school for a whole year (including the compensation to the family for the loss of her salary) and one reading room with books and a trained librarian costs $5,000.

You can support Room to Read this Thursday, Feb. 10 at 7:30 p.m. at Molly Spillane’s in Mamaroneck.  For every alcoholic beverage sold,  Molly Spillane’s will donate $1 to Room to Read for its local language program.  A donation of $10 is suggested at the door, which automatically enters you into a raffle for prizes.  100% of your donation will go to Room to Read.
