CELEBRATIONS. Art Exhibit featuring Joan Scheuer

The Larchmont Public Library presents “Celebrations”, an art exhibit featuring works by Joan Scheuer in the Library’s Oresman Gallery from May 2, through May 27, 2011. The exhibit is free and open to everyone during normal library hours. There will be an artist’s reception celebrating Ms. Scheuer on Saturday, May 7, from 2:30pm to 4:00pm. The reception is also free and everyone is welcome.

Joan Scheuer sees painting a wonderful resource. When she sees a landscape that moves her or flowers that beg to be put on paper; trees and other things around me that call for praise that is when she picks up her brushes. She began painting in high school and was encouraged by good teachers. Since then she has mentored with many gifted artists, among them, Victor D’Amico, Will Barnet, Bob Ternes and in Larchmont, Laura Heiss and Hope Friedland. She credits them with sustaining her interest in art while she raised four children, traveled, and helped start a local pre-school program called The Village Fours.

Joan was elected to the Mamaroneck Board of Education and became interested in how public schools were funded. She later went on to earn a Ph.d. in school finance at NYU. A full time job with the New York City Board of Education followed. She spent ten years working on New York State and City school budgets and better ways to finance public schools in New York State.  Now retired, Joan has more time for art and has been enjoying painting in pastels with John Conroy and spending time in Larchmont and on Martha’s Vineyard with the landscapes and the people she loves. As her ninetieth birthday approaches she believes that she has much to celebrate, thus her exhibit is aptly titled “Celebrations.”
