By: Valerie M. O’Keeffe, Supervisor, Town of Mamaroneck.
Release: There will be a Tri-Municipal 9/11 Memorial Ceremony for the victims of the terrorist attacks of 10 years ago who resided in our community, the Village of Larchmont, Village of Mamaroneck, and the Town of Mamaroneck, on Sunday, September 11, at 1 p.m. at the “Girl Scout 9/11 Memorial Rock” at Memorial Park on Myrtle Boulevard in the Town of Mamaroneck. Partcipants will include members of the Fire and Police Departments of the Villages of Larchmont and Mamaroneck and the Town of Mamaroneck, the Mamaroneck Ambulance District, Local Girl Scout Troop and Boy Scout Troop Honor Guards, and public officials of all three municipalities. All are welcome.
The Girl Scouts of Larchmont-Mamaroneck will be participating in the 9/11 memorial ceremony. Girls from local troops will be present and plan to sing during the ceremony. Cadette troop 2056 will be participating in the ceremony and dedicating two benches at the site of the memorial, which their troop and the Larchmont-Mamaroneck Girl Scout community have donated. The girls in troop 2056 are earning their silver award, the 2nd highest award in girl scouting, and the installation of these benches is a key element of their "9/11: Sit and Reflect" Project. The girls also plan to recite a poem during the ceremony.
The Girl Scouts were originally responsible for putting in the 9/11 memorial, often referred to as the "Girl Scout Rock," which lists the names of those Larchmont-Mamaroneck community members who were lost on 9/11. The memorial was put in following the terror attacks and The Girl Scouts have participated every year since then in the Town's 9/11 memorial ceremony.
