What We Really Know About Suicide and Medications:

Kelly Posner, Ph.D
Director and Principal Investigator, Center for Suicide
Risk Assessment, Columbia University; Principal Investigator, Columbia/FDA Classification Project for Drug Safety Analyses

Suicide is a major public health challenge and prevention depends on appropriate identification and screening.  The Columbia-Suicide Severity Rating Scale (C-SSRS) identifies at-risk individuals who may have otherwise been missed and refers them to appropriate levels of care. Due to its demonstrated ability to predict suicide attempts in suicidal and non-suicidal individuals (which is a national priority for prevention), the C-SSRS streamlines assessment of risk, allowing for the specification of criteria that trigger the need for further intervention, decreasing unnecessary treatment referrals.
