Flood Mitigation Proposals Worry Some Mamaroneck Property Owners

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineering is study how to relieve the area's flooding problems.

MAMARONECK, NY — A flood mitigation plan the Village of Mamaroneck has been working on for a long time may mean that portions of some residents’ properties might have to be forfeited.

At issue are about 50 private properties that could see some loss of land if the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers deems it necessary because it has to expand a channel to accomplish the flood mitigation, the Journal News said.

The Army Corps has a page on its website detailing the study it has been conducting on the Mamaroneck-Sheldrake Rivers Basin in the village.

In the section “Response to Comments,” the corps said the only acquisitions being considered for the project were permanent channel improvement easements and work area easements that would be temporary.

Details on the location of the easements will not be determined until the surveys of the river are completed.
