Free Bird Watching Walk at Larchmont Reservoir Planned for Saturday Morning, December 5, 2015

A free bird watching walk that begins at the Larchmont Reservoir is planned for Saturday, December 5, 2015 to be led by Hank Weber and bird experts from the Wild Bird Center in Scarsdale.

“Everyone from beginners to advanced birders is invited to participate,” said Weber. “We expect to see many local birds as well as ducks and other winter visitors,”Weber said. “The walk takes place in a peaceful natural environment with friendly people.”

Monthly, the Wild Bird Center leads a free bird watching walk to different local nature centers. During 2015, it observed and identified 119 different bird species, ranging from hummingbirds to bald eagles.

The walk on December 5, 2015, at 8:15 a.m., will start at the Larchmont Reservoir (sometimes called Sheldrake Environmental Center), located at 687 Weaver Street in Mamaroneck across from Bonnie Briar Country Club.

“There is only one sign — a small one on the opposite side of the street so watch for it as it is easy to miss,” said Weber. “Turn into driveway and continue past the white house on the left to a small parking area.”

“This is an easy walk on level ground and it will end before 10 a.m.,” Weber said. He advised participants to dress appropriately for the weather and bring binoculars.

Other coming walks

Another bird watching walk is scheduled for New Year’s Day, January 1, 2016, at Greenwich Point, a peninsula jutting into Long Island Sound, and in February, 2016, a bald eagle hunt is planned. “We have never missed seeing the eagles on our previous walks,” said Webe
