Groove Gets Babies to Boogie in Larchmont

Groove, offering music classes for children, comes to 108 Chatsworth Ave. in Larchmont on Monday, Feb.14.

Maybe your baby is a budding Billy Joel or a certain Shakira-to-be.  They pound on pots and pans and move like mad whenever they hear music.  And you’re thinking maybe I should channel all that energy into something productive and educational.  A music class at Groove in Larchmont could be just the thing for you and your little prodigy.  The studio is moving to a new location on Monday, Feb. 14 at 108 Chatsworth Ave.

“It’s the only class I know of where the parents have as good a time as the kids,” said owner Lesley Barovick.

Barovick, a classically-trained musican and former director of development at Lincoln Center, wanted her children exposed to music classes at a young age.  So much so that she ended up taking her then toddler son all the way to Brooklyn for classes with musician David Weinstone, when she moved to Westchester in 2003.

There was nothing like David Weinstone’s Music for Aardvarks and Other Mammals available for parents in the area.  His popular children’s songs have been featured on Nick Jr. and written about in Time Magazine.

So Lesley and her husband Andrew decided to open Groove and bring the Music for Aardvarks experience to Westchester.

In just one year, they had a hit on their hands. “We have over 250 families taking classes with us,” said Lesley.  And now the Barovicks are busy getting a new dance and music spot ready to go.

Groove’s schedule includes classes every day of the week at its new location in Larchmont as well as satellite locations in Tarrytown and Rye.

Groove offers classes for children from six months to five years.  From Baby Rock to Studio Art to Not-So-Preppy Playground, even post-natal yoga and a fathers’ group, Groove has something for everyone in the family.

“Parents can stop by all week,” said Lesley. Students currently enrolled in the winter session will finish their classes in the new Chatsworth location.  Groove will be hosting a Vacation Jams event Feb. 21, 23 and 24 at the new Larchmont location and on Feb. 22 at JCC on the Hudson in Tarrytown.

Groove was voted “Best New Kids’ Music Class” and most recently “Best Place to Spend Time With Kids” in Westchester Magazine.
