Mamaroneck Mayor Tom Murphy celebrated the good news, but said that the road to a full recovery will still be a "long haul."

MAMARONECK, NY — Harbor Island Park, one of the main staging areas for relief efforts in the wake of Post-Tropical Cyclone Ida, will once again be open for practices and sports competitions on the athletic fields.

Mamaroneck officials initially anticipated that the practice fields in Harbor Island Park would need to be closed for emergency vehicle staging until September 30 at the earliest, but Mayor Tom Murphy announced today that the facilities would reopen well ahead of schedule. Starting September 16, the fields in the park reopen to youth sports.

Murphy thanked the community for their patience and understanding, but cautioned that much work needs to be done to help those hardest hit by the storm and resulting flood.

"Through the amazing progress of our municipal workers we will no longer need to keep the fields closed," Murphy said in a statement released on Wednesday. "Now we need to concentrate our efforts on getting our residents who have suffered gravely back on their feet. That will be a long haul goal that we should keep focused upon."
