I Scream, You Scream, We All Scream for…Frozen Yogurt!

The Lees open YogoBerry, a self-serve frozen yogurt shop, in Larchmont this week. We have the scoop.

Wha and Joanne Lee immigrated to the United States from Korea over 30 years ago. Each was employed quickly upon arrival. Wha Lee worked for a Japanese company, and his wife toyed with the fashion world before opening her own Korean grocery store in Scarsdale.

About a year ago, Joanne Lee bought the shop next to her store and used the space to open the first YogoBerry in New York. Nine months later, Mount Kisco got a taste of frozen yogurt as well, and on Tuesday, the natural, fresh and non-fat frozen yogurt chain opened for business in Larchmont.

"Larchmont was a good place for us to open a store because a lot of people drive through this area," said Joanne Lee.

Located at 2114 Boston Post Rd., YogoBerry is a self-serve chain. Customers can choose from a myriad of flavors, including chocolate, vanilla, banana, strawberry, cappuccino and the original tart yogurt. People are encouraged to mix the flavors and add toppings to their treat. These tasty accessories include fresh fruit, like lychee, kiwi and mango, as well as nuts, granola and cereal, chocolate chips, gummy bears and coconut. There are also sauces, like honey and caramel, to squeeze over the yogurt. Customers then weigh their cups to determine the price.

"We choose the flavors and the fruit depending on the season," said Joanne Lee. "And we also make the flavors that the customers like best."

YogoBerry first opened in Texas and Joanne Lee feels proud that she and her husband brought the chain to New York. She believes most people like yogurt because it is nutritional and healthy. The non-fat treat helps people watch their weight, and no one feels guilty eating it.

Joanne Lee's favorite combination is the original yogurt with fresh blueberries and granola. She wants her store to be about the younger generation, which is why she is hiring (and is still looking to hire) high school and college students. She wants part-time workers who are friendly and can engage with customers, and students who are looking for work experience.

"My husband and I want to open five or six more stores," she said. "There will be three more YogoBerrys in Westchester and another three in the Bronx or New York City."

Already booming with business, especially after the free samples on Tuesday, the community is raving about YogoBerry. The self-serve option allows customers to control portion sizes and prices, and the wide array of flavors and toppings ensure that all will enjoy this healthy treat.
