Initiative Continues to Save Mamaroneck's Historic DeLancey-Cooper House

Developers are eyeing the property.

The local historical society is continuing attempts to save the historic DeLancey-Cooper House in Mamaroneck from developers who wish to turn the property into a housing complex.

Fios1News reports that the effort mounted by the Mamaroneck Historical Society is to raise about $2 million to purchase the house. It was built in 1792 and was once home to James Fenimore Cooper, author of “The Last of the Mohicans.”

Currently, the property, located on West Boston Post Road and Fenimore Road, houses the Italian restaurant La Piccola Casa on the ground floor and apartments upstairs.

“We are hoping to purchase the house and land from the owners,” the society wrote on its website, adding that it hopes to turn the building into a museum. “This will require major fundraising for this historic Mamaroneck home. We are hoping to raise the well over $2 million which is the asking price. We are looking to major donors who understand the importance of protecting such a historic home for generations to come.”
