Mamaroneck residents interested in learning more about the benefits of installing solar energy panels can get detailed information about costs, savings, government incentives, and group purchasing options at the Solarize Larchmont-Mamaroneck Workshop, to be held Wednesday, March 4, 2015 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Mamaroneck Public Library, 136 Prospect Avenue.

Solarize Larchmont-Mamaroneck is an outgrowth of Solarize Westchester, a countywide effort to help residents take advantage of a unique discount buying program that uses a tiered-pricing structure, town/village-supported education and outreach, and one competitively selected installer to dramatically reduce the cost of solar. The more residents sign up for Solarize, the more the cost is reduced. All contracts must be signed by June 22, 2015.

“Many people are interested in solar energy because it’s good for the environment and it can save them money in the long run, but they are concerned by the initial investment required,” said Monica Barach,co-chair of the Village of Mamaroneck Committee for the Environment. “The Solarize Westchester initiative is designed to make the investment in solar energy more affordable than ever, and in many cases homeowners and businesses who participate can have their investment paid back by cost savings in electricity in less than five years.

Photovoltaic or solar energy is widely documented to reduce energy costs over time. New York State residents are particularly well compensated for solar power, with the third highest rate of return on solar energy in the nation, behind Hawaii and the District of Columbia. Moreover, studies have indicated that solar panels can increase the re-sale value of a property.
