International Fair to Take Mamaroneck Avenue School By Storm

The annual fair will be held in Mamaroneck this Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Mamaroneck is no stranger to cultural diversity; walking down the main avenue in the village, one can dine at a Middle Eastern, French, Mexican, Peruvian, Japanese or Turkish restaurant. It’s not unusual to overhear residents conversing in Spanish or English as they walk to the train station or run errands.

In celebration of this diversity, the Mamaroneck Avenue School (MAS) will be throwing their annual International Fair this Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The fair—which has been a tradition in the community for over 10 years—is one of the biggest fundraising events for the school, netting $20K in previous years and attracting thousands of attendees.

With food as the defining characteristic of most cultures, there will be a smorgasbord of delectable delights available in the International Food Court such as tamales, rice and beans, lasagna, arroz con pollo, and baklava, as well as standard fair provisions such as popcorn and cotton candy.

Along with food, there will also be an array of craft activities involving culturally symbolic items such as Mexican hair flowers, crowns of England, Mardi Gras masks, Australian boomerangs and Moroccan hands. Kids can also experience spin art, a “cake walk,” basketball, hockey and—new this year—a Dance Revolution game, beading booth and obstacle course sponsored by the New York Sports Club.

“The whole Mamaroneck Avenue School community comes together to make this event possible. It is about sharing and celebrating our diversity as a community; having fun together; and raising funds for the school to continue to support amazing programming,” said Jennifer Mitchell, co-chair of the event.

Parents can bid on items in the silent auction that include golf packages, tickets to theatres and sporting events, restaurant certificates and jewelry.  Additionally, there will be six theme baskets being raffled which include a Razor scooter, Kindle Fire HD and a variety of Apple products including an iPod Nano, iPod touch and iPad mini.

¡Pásala bien!

The Mamaroneck Avenue School International Fair will be held at the school on Saturday, March 16 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.  Admission is free; raffle tickets are $1.
