According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), electronic waste is growing two-three times faster than any other waste stream, yet in 2009, only 25 percent of TVs, computer products and cell phones thrown out were collected for recycling.  Only eight percent of cell phones were recycled.

Cell phones pack the most punch in terms of valuable material to be mined from recycling according to the EPA, with metals like gold, silver, platinum, palladium, copper, tin and zinc; plastics and rechargeable batteries that can be reused. Recycling cell phones also reaps the additional benefits of eliminating the need to mine and process new materials, which leads to conservation of both energy and natural resources.
