Larchmont and Mamaroneck Remember 9/11 Victims

Members of the Larchmont and Mamaroneck communities, as well as first responders, gathered at Girl Scout Rock in Memorial Park to pay tribute to the victims of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

"Each year we debate whether to have this ceremony," said Mamaroneck Town Supervisor Nancy Seligson. "This is a time to come together as a community."

She said that even though it wasn't a holiday she thought it is beneficial to come together and "remember and acknowledge" those who died.

In the crowd were members of the fire departments, ambulance corps, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts and veterans, to name a few.

State Senator George Latimer said when he thinks of the victims of the attacks he realizes that he doesn't know who is black or white or Democrat or Republican.

"All I know is they were human beings," he said. "They were our neighbors."

County Legislator Judy Meyers said the Sept. 11 attacks changed our world forever.

"It is very, very important to remember what it means," she said, "and how the community came together … like nothing I'd seen before."

During the ceremony, the names of community members who lives were lost on Sept. 11, 2001.
