Larchmont Library's New Adult Summer Reading Challenge

Phileas Fogg would be proud of the library's "Around the World in 80 Books" challenge.

The Larchmont Public Library wants to make reading fun for all ages. The library is launching its first annual Adult Summer Reading Challenge with a theme of “Around the World in 80 Books."

The unique challenge for adults will supplement the library’s program for children and teens, which takes the theme “Dig Into Reading" and runs from June 21 through August 30.  And though typically summer reading programs are focused on children and teens, the library is mixing it up with its first ever Adult Summer Reading Challenge.

The “Around the World in 80 Books” challenge doesn’t require that participants read 80 books. Rather, according to the release, the challenge divides a list of 80 titles into seven “sections” each representing one of the seven continents.

Readers simply drop by the library to pick up their Summer Reading "passport" and select one book from each continent to read. Participants can win prizes that have been donated by local businesses. It's simple. For each book read, the passport is stamped. For each stamp, readers earn a “chance” to win grand prizes at the end of the challenge in August.

The grand prizes, which mirror the seven continents theme, have been provided by Red Mango in Larchmont, Coriander Modern Indian Restaurant also in Larchmont, Starbucks, Wine Gems at Perriellos, and Larchmont’s Cocoa Chocolate Shop.

“Because the library serves the entire community and not just children and teens, we felt strongly that the summer reading programs we offer should include the whole family”, said Laura Eckley, Library Director in the release, adding that the library is grateful to the local businesses who have sweetened the program with the donated prizes.
