MAMARONECK, NY — All Mamaroneck public schools will close at the end of the school day Friday for two weeks. Superintendent Dr. Robert I. Shaps said in a letter to the community that the move is being made based on ongoing conversations with elected officials, the state commissioner of education and public health agencies.

He said it will align with regional containment efforts that will hopefully prevent further spread of the new coronavirus, or COVID-19.

"Students and staff will return to school on Monday, March 30, 2020, pending our assessment of the situation at that time," Shap said.

He said that, accordingly, all district facilities, fields and playgrounds will be locked and off limits to the general public and local organizations.

Special rules for building access for upcoming board of education meetings will be shared in the coming days with the public.

Shap said that Monday and Tuesday will be designated "snow days" for students and staff, but the district's remote learning program will begin Wednesday, March 18. There may be additional changes to the school calendar, including adjustments to school vacation and previously designated days.

Students will receive information on remote learning Friday. The Home-School Connection page will have additional information.

"Transitioning to remote learning will be an adjustment for all," Shap said. "As we've indicated previously, aside from wanting to keep our students healthy, our goal is to ensure that students are engaged and learning, while we remain attentive to their emotional needs during this unsettling and unprecedented time."
