Mamaroneck In Search Of Next Poet Laureate
A connection with their muse is important, but the volunteer appointment also involves a lot of work and comes with big shoes to fill.
MAMARONECK, NY — Mamaroneck is looking for a successor to their first ever poet laureate, Marie Louise Cox, who died in February of last year.
The Village of Mamaroneck Arts Council is calling for nominations to the post.
The Arts Council will consider nominees and recommend a candidate to the village and town boards of trustees. The position is a volunteer one and the term of office is four years.

The poet laureate will have wide latitude in implementing the suggested requirements of the position, according to the organization.
The poet laureate should:

- Reside in the Village or Town of Mamaroneck.
- Participate in the village’s annual Poetry Live! event.
- Participate in the dedication of the Mary Louise Cox memorial poetry garden.
- Champion the art of poetry and the spoken word.
- Encourage appreciation of the art form and creative expression.
- Inspire the next generation of poets and their readers, potentially working directly with youth groups or within schools.
- Celebrate local poets and authors — past and present.
- Celebrate the area’s cultural heritage.
- Maintain a connection with the Village of Mamaroneck Arts Council, including leadership of event planning in consultation with the council.
Poets can apply for the position by sending a cover letter, resume and 2-3 poetry examples (or a link to a website with the work) to arts council volunteer Solange De Santis at solange@solangedesantis.com.
The deadline for submission is Friday, February 25.
