Manhole Fires Cause Explosion, 2 Police Officers Injured, Public Asked To Avoid Area: Larchmont FD

Authorities say that there will continue to be road closures and temporary power outages in the area due to emergency repairs.

LARCHMONT, NY — A Chatsworth Avenue manhole fire has caused injuries and triggered power outages, along with emergency and public works responses in the area.

The Village of Larchmont Fire Department has released information about a manhole fire that took place Friday night.

On Friday, at 8:02pm, the Larchmont Fire Department responded to a report of smoke coming from a manhole in the area of Chatsworth Ave. and North Ave.

The department says that Engine 35 and Tower Ladder 7 were at the scene within three minutes of dispatch and confirmed the smoke was coming from a single manhole cover.

Soon after, two additional manholes caught fire in the immediate area.

After firefighters secured the scene, they confirmed the occupants of nearby buildings and pedestrians were out of harm's way, and checked for levels of carbon monoxide and other hazardous conditions.

There were no civilian injuries from the incident.

However, the department says that during the operation, a manhole cover exploded, causing two Larchmont Police Department officers to be injured. One of the officers was taken to a local hospital.

The Larchmont Fire Department says that the cause of the fire is currently believed to be underground electrical issues, and Con Ed electric crews arrived at the scene.

Authorities say that there will continue to be road closures and temporary power outages in the area due to emergency repairs.

The public is asked to avoid the area.

As of 11:45 p.m. on Friday, the Larchmont Fire Department and the Larchmont Police Department were still at the scene, assisting Con Ed.
