Westchester Comes Together in Solidarity for Immigration

Later this month, Westchester Jewish Coalition for Immigration (WJCI) will unite community leaders and members to unify human rights and social justice for immigrants, asylum seekers, and refugees. Ruth Messinger, a former American political leader in New York City and immigration activist, will serve as the event's keynote speaker.

In June of this year, UNHCR released a report that stated that there are 100 million people globally who have now been forced to flee their homes, highlighting worldwide food insecurity, the climate crisis, the war in Ukraine, and other emergencies from Africa to Afghanistan as leading causes.

With these issues facing immigrants here and abroad, the time is now to learn more and see how we can move the needle on these very different challenges. To educate and inspire Westchester's community to act, WJCI is holding a free countywide solidarity meeting on Wednesday, September 21 at 7:30 pm. Everyone is invited to join, including community members, local clergy, legislators, immigration leaders, and refugee and asylum rights activists from Westchester, Rockland County, and the NYC metropolitan area.

The evening's keynote speaker will be Messinger, the American Jewish World Service Global Ambassador and a social justice consultant in and for the Jewish community. She is also a board member of Hazon and recently visited Afghanistan to advocate for women's human rights and volunteers one day a week at the Port Authority with the arriving asylum speakers.

The panel will include Jirandy Martinez, MPA and Executive Director from Community Resource Center; Carola Bracco, Executive Director and CEO from Neighbors Link; and Yaritza Mendez, Co-Director of Organizing from Make the Road NY.
