Business Profile: Brittany Beauty School

Owner Gary Ferrara spoke with Patch on the Levittown facility.

Since 1968, Brittany Beauty School has stood out as a prominent institution for cosmetology and hairdressing. When now owner Gary Ferrara took over in 2000, he knew he wanted to add more to the name.

Today, the Levittown location is home to nearly 200 students each year specializing in hairdressing, cosmetology, nail technology and waxing. According to Ferrara, Brittany Beauty School staffs only seasoned experts trained in the latest trends to best educate their students.

"We have modern instructors up to date on all the latest methods in cosmetology," said Ferrara, a Dix Hills resident. "I have a kind staff, who have a lot of patience along with their skills."

A professional in the industry for more than three decades, hairdressing was in Ferrara's genes. After growing up in Florida where his father ran a chain of beauty schools, Ferrara moved on to study and work in New York City before purchasing the Long Island institute.

"My father had five sons and we are all hairdressers," "We learned our trade and went onto our own training," he explained. "I love what I do, and I love educating students so they can leave here and make a livelyhood for themselves through haridressing.

Brittany Beauty School is licensed by the State Education Department and nationally accredited by the National Accrediting Commission of Cosmetology Arts and Sciences.

"We wouldn't operate a school without the proper accreditation," Ferrara stated. "Financial aid is key to our enrollment. Without it, our enrollment would be cut in half. It's a $12,500 program, with the kit just a bit over $13,000 and nobody has that these days. Our tuition is a bit higher than other schools in the area but the result is well worth it."

Brittany Beauty School offers various programs to earn your license in cosmetology. Students can attend full time for 7-10 months or part time where the courseload is completed in 12-18 months.

In addition to student instruction, Brittany Beauty School also accepts walk-ins and scheduled appointments for all beauty services. All work is performed by current students but supervised by a trained professional. For more information on Brittany Beauty School and their three locations, visit their website.
