COUNTY FINALS: MacArthur Falls to Carey in Game One

Tom Kelleher had the only RBI for the Generals, who lost 10-1.

Though they were dressed in red, white and blue, Memorial Day wasn't much of a celebration for the MacArthur Generals.

The Seahawks from Carey High School showed up at SUNY Farmingdale with their bats ready to go, and they didn't stop until they had a 10-1 victory in the books.

MacArthur pitcher Jesse Tuozzo had some trouble settling down early on, and Carey jumped on the opportunity. By the third they led 5-0, though Tuozzo struck out two batters that inning.

Tuozzo got MacArthur's first hit in the bottom of the fourth on an infield single with Joe Chiaramonte on first base after a walk, but the Generals were unable to squeak out a run.

Carey rallied in the fifth, and although MacArthur's quick fielders were able to hold off a run when they hit a long single with runners on first and second, loaded bases meant trouble. Things got sloppy when a run scored on a wild pitch. The next batter walked, and two runs came in when an attempted pick-off throw went past the first baseman. The Seahawks came out of the inning on top 10-0.

Dan Svenelid came in to relieve Tuozzo, and in the sixth Carey also made a pitching change.

In the bottom of the seventh in their last time up to the plate, the Generals finally showed some life. Mike Koslowski led off with a walk, and Brett Ellers blooped an infield single. Tom Kelleher blasted a double to left field for the team's only RBI of the day. Nick Kaywood kept the Generals alive with a walk to load the bases again, but Kevin Roach was struck out to end the game.

The Generals will try to ignite the fire they found late in Game One earlier in Game Two tomorrow at 7:30 p.m. at SUNY Farmingdale to keep their hopes of a championship alive.
