As a Levittown resident since 1948, I take the integrity of my property seriously. It has been chemical-free and organic since 1983, and I do my best to leave a small footprint on MotherEarth. I grow fruits and veggies and always share my bounty with those critters who come by to feast at my "table."
I also prefer the less invasive types of tools and machines: I eschew those that are gas or electric powered in favor of those that are human powered - that is, powered by ME!!
My wonderful lawn mower, the kind that has no motor or power source other than a human that pushes it, my reel mower (as it is called), has stopped working effectively and needs some repair to get her back to sharply mowing the lawn again. Unfortunately, there no longer seem to be any shops that handle an assignment like this. Not only did I have to explain what a reel mower was, but I kept being told to buy a power mower instead. Reel mowers are still being made, sold, and bought, but no longer repaired? How can this be?

Has Levittown and its surrounding environs become so caught up in 21st Century Mode, that what's good for our planet is so much less important (to the point of non-existence) than what's expedient or profitable? Are there no like-minded Journeyers out there who still opt for a simpler kind of life?
Through this experience, I have come to discover how far out of the current loop my reel mower and I are. I'm afraid that she is taking this a lot better than I am.
