Demolition Begins on Long-Empty Nassau Kmart

The building, which has been vacant for nearly 20 years, is being torn down to make space for a new Home Depot.

The former Levittown Kmart on Hempstead Turnpike, which has sat vacant for nearly two decades, has finally been knocked down to make room for something new.

Once the site of thriving businesses such as Kmart, Borders Books and Office Max, most of structure has languished, vacant for nearly 20 years. The property, located at 3350 Hempstead Turnpike, was demolished to make way for the construction of a 114,000 square foot building that will house The Home Depot as well as a 28,000 square foot garden center.

This is the latest in a series of new developments in the Levittown community. In recent years, several properties in Levittown that had been vacant have been renovated or redeveloped. A new Ford dealership, a new CVS, a supermarket, Starbucks, Zwanger-Pesiri Radiology and Saf-T-Swim are just a few of the business boons that have come to Levittown. Hempstead Town has also enhanced business areas in Levittown with streetscape improvements that include brick-paved walkways, Victorian streetlamps, a revamped Veterans Memorial and upgraded decorating of village greens.
