First Lieutenant Stephen E. Karopczyc Memorial Dedication

Medal of Honor Recipient Honored

The members of American Legion Post 1711 in Levittown along with members of the Levittown Fire Department and other Veteran Organizations had the honor of unveiling a memorial to honor the memory of First Lieutenant Stephen E. Karopczyc on Saturday March 10th 2018 at 10:00 am. Stephen was awarded the Medal of Honor Posthumously for his actions in Vietnam on March 12, 1967. Stephen was wounded in the heat of the battle. He refused aid and kept fighting. He died trying to keep a grenade from exploding on his injured comrades.

Stephen’s younger brother Walter Karopczyc was in Levittown for the statue’s unveiling. Walter stated that "We appreciate the fact that his memory continues. We hope that this is an inspiration to the community and we greatly appreciate their effort."

The bronze likeness of Stephen and a plaque can be viewed at the American Legion Post 1711 flagpole which is located at 3123 North Jerusalem Road Levittown, NY 11756.
