Island Trees Girls Track Takes Second Place in Conference

For the first time since 2008, the Island Trees girls winter track team placed second at the Winter Track Conference Championship.

Led by senior captains Danielle Cassar and Amelia Giebel, this is only the second time in school history this title of conference runner up has been achieved.

Conference champion honors were awarded to Kaitlyn Abreu in the high jump, Alyssa Mustafa in both the long and triple jumps and Alexa Dolgos in both the 300 and 600 meter sprints.

Mustafa, who is only a sophomore, set a new school record in the long jump with a mark of 16 feet and 8.5 inches, demolishing the previous record by almost 9 inches.

All-Conference status was earned by senior Kaitlyn Abreu in the 55 meter high hurdles, Victoria Sobredo in the shot put, and Angela Brocco in the race-walk.

Throughout this grueling competition the Island Trees girls’ team chanted “plaque” which was their ultimate goal.  That Friday night, as they walked out of St. Anthony’s, not only did they hold their heads high but the Conference Runner-Up plaque as well.
