Levittown Board of Education Recognized by Community

Students and community members presented gifts and thanks to the school board for their hard work and dedication.

Principals, teachers and councilmen gathered to honor the Levittown Public Schools Board of Education Wednesday night, but what stood out most was the obvious impact the board has had on its students.

Brianne Giuliano, president of the National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) at Jonas E. Salk Middle School, led her peers in a beyond-their-years presentation of appreciation to the board.

The NJHS officers took turns thanking the board for various contributions to the community including attending the honor society's induction ceremony, supporting art and music programs, and cheering on local sports teams.

The board received everything from dinner and personalized desk clocks to donations for the Wisdom Lane Food Pantry, Autism Speaks and the American Cancer Society.

"If we are looking for role models in community service and volunteerism, we need look no further than our Board of Education," said student Evan Gardner on behalf of MacArthur High School.

Also represented by principals and well-spoken students were Wisdom Lane Middle School, Division Avenue High School and the Gerald R. Claps Career and Technical Center.

Elementary school students created posters for the board, which were put on display at the Levittown Memorial Education Center.

"I speak on behalf of the entire board when I say we are so honored by the way the students and staff recognized the work the Board of Education does," said Mike Pappas, board president. "It was a very nice ceremony; I love how they got the kids involved."

The board was honored with citations by Nassau County Comptroller George Maragos and Sixth District Town of Hempstead Councilman Gary Hudes on behalf of Town of Hempstead Supervisor Kate Murray.

Hudes thanked the spouses and children of the board members as well, who give up time with their loved ones for the betterment of the school community.

"This is just a small recognition of the time you and your families give to our community," he said.
