Levittown Teacher Heading to D.C. to Perform at Inauguration

Wisdom Lane Middle School special education and world language teacher Ed Moore will be heading to Washington, D.C. with the Nassau County Firefighters Pipes and Drums band to perform at the presidential inauguration of Donald Trump on Jan. 20.

The Levittown teacher has been a member of the band since 1998 and is currently president of the organization, which is just one of 40 in the nation chosen to perform at the historical event.

Moore said he is proud that the band has been chosen and looks forward to being a part of the nation’s rich history.

“This is a historical event and is not about politics,” he said. “The inauguration is about our country’s history, and I am glad to be a part of it.”

Moore, who has played the bagpipes for 20 years, was influenced through his mother’s Irish heritage and his love of the movie “Braveheart.” The band practices every Wednesday at the East Meadow headquarters. This is not the first time he has performed for a U.S. president. The band played during a 9/11 memorial celebration at Eisenhower Park, which was attended by former U.S. President George W. Bush.

In the classroom, Moore said he encourages his students to formulate their own ideas about the country’s issues and politics, and to avoid being influenced by others. His philosophy was carried out during the 2016 election process. Prior to the election, his students learned about the Electoral College and the political parties and debated issues openly.
