While league play has yet to begin, schools across Nassau County are facing off against non-conference opponents on the diamond.

On the boys’ side, Roosevelt, Mepham, New Hyde Park, Garden City and Hewlett are already off to starts of 2-0 or better, with everyone but Hewlett boasting a run differential in the 20s after just a couple of games. Hewlett isn’t slumping, however, as the Bulldogs carry a +15 run differential, built in wins over Friends Academy, Baldwin and Valley Stream South.

Bigger schools including Massapequa, Oceanside and Farmingdale are all scheduled to kick off their seasons in the coming week, in action against Garden City, Plainview-Old Bethpage and East Meadow, respectively.

Non-Conference Lacrosse Play

South Side, Division Avenue and Mineola are all off to 3-0 starts in the boys’ lacrosse season, while a four-way tie exists atop league 1A. For Bethpage, Massapequa, Syosset and Wantagh, the hope is to break out of that logjam of 2-0 teams.

Massapequa will take on Westchester County opponent Mamaroneck this weekend in a non-league game, while Syosset takes on Sachem North and Wantagh takes on Kellenberg.

In the girls’ lacrosse standings, Farmingdale and Island Trees have both leapt out to 4-0 starts in non-league play. Farmingdale boasts wins over Seaford, Carle Place, Wantagh and Long Beach, while Island trees has bested Sewahanka, Great Neck South and Hempstead comfortably, while squeaking by Wheatley in an 11-10 nailbiter.

Unfortunately for lacrosse enthusiasts, the two undefeateds are not on each other’s schedule this regular season.

Flag Football Kicks Off

In a week that saw NFL players try unsuccessfully to best flag football pros at their own game, flag football in Nassau County rolled right along. Cold Spring Harbor, Massapequa and Valley Stream jumped out to 3-0 starts, including a trio of 20-plus point wins for Massapequa over Bethpage, Division Avenue and East Meadow. Cold Spring Harbor has maintained a strong defensive record thus far, shutting out Jericho in its second game of the season and keeping Hempstead and Westbury to single digits when they played. For Valley Stream, the season made it into its second week before the flag football team had even conceded a point. Shutout wins against Glen Cove and Roslyn were followed by a 32-12 win over Farmingdale in week two.
